Course Description
America in the years after the Civil War was divided, and recovering from a fraticidal conflict which claimed over 600,000 lives. Yet within a generation, America had united once again, and had become the world's leading economic and military power. During the same period, America transformed itself from a rural, agrarian nation, to an urban, industrial giant. That transition had profound social changes as well. History 9 will explore those exciting developments, with an emphasis on discovering the uniquely American character and how it affects American history and development. Our concentration will be on themes and ideas, not dates. The 20th century is rightfully called the American century, and after this course, the student will understand the social, political, and economic values and trends that made America what it is today..
